Overview
Rogues are one of the most engaging and rewarding classes to play in The Burning Crusade, offering strong single-target damage alongside meaningful raid utility. Despite common misconceptions, Rogues contribute more than just raw DPS and remain a valuable melee option throughout the expansion. Combat is the definitive PvE specialization for Rogues in TBC Classic. Through powerful offensive cooldowns and weapon-focused talents, Combat provides the highest sustained damage output available to the class. While Rogues may fall slightly behind Hunters and Warlocks in the earliest phases, their damage scales extremely well with gear, becoming highly competitive in Phases 3 through 5. In addition to damage, Rogues bring valuable debuffs, interrupts, and defensive tools that allow them to survive mechanics, reduce healer strain, and manage their own threat effectively.
Strengths
High Burst & Late-Game Scaling
Combat Rogues deal exceptional burst damage through powerful cooldowns and scale extremely well with gear. While early-phase damage may lag behind ranged DPS, Rogues become highly competitive in later tiers.
Energy-Based Resource System
Rogues use Energy rather than Mana, allowing for consistent uptime without downtime between pulls. This enables faster dungeon pacing and sustained raid performance.
Improved Expose Armor Utility
With Improved Expose Armor, Rogues can apply a stronger armor reduction debuff than Sunder Armor, increasing physical damage taken by the target and boosting overall raid DPS.
Strong Defensive Toolkit
Abilities such as Cloak of Shadows, Evasion, and Vanish allow Rogues to mitigate damage, avoid dangerous mechanics, and reduce healing and dispel requirements.
Reliable Control & Interrupts
Rogues bring consistent interrupts and crowd control through Kick, Kidney Shot, Cheap Shot, and Deadly Throw, making them excellent at handling dangerous enemies.
Weaknesses
Melee-Unfriendly Encounter Design
Melee DPS face stricter positioning requirements and are frequently punished by cleaves, whirlwinds, and ground effects that disproportionately affect Rogues.
Highly Gear Dependent
Rogue damage scales almost entirely with weapon and gear quality. Weak weapons or poor itemization result in noticeably lower DPS compared to classes with higher base spell damage.
Complex Rotation
Optimal Rogue play requires managing multiple finishers, reacting to proc-based talents, and adapting rotations dynamically, making the spec mechanically demanding.

Human
BiSSword and Mace Specialization provides valuable expertise, and Diplomacy accelerates reputation farming. Perception is also excellent in PvP.
Horde
Troll
Berserking offers the highest potential DPS if properly utilized, scaling extremely well with cooldown stacking and low-health windows.
Human — Best Alliance PvE Choice
Sword and Mace Specialization grants 5 expertise, significantly reducing dodges and parries—especially valuable due to the scarcity of expertise on gear. Diplomacy speeds up reputation farming, and Perception offers strong PvP utility. Best for: Consistent DPS, early gearing
Dwarf
Stoneform provides situational value by removing poisons, bleeds, and diseases. While defensive in nature, it offers no direct DPS increase. Best for: Niche defensive utility
Gnome
Escape Artist can help counter root mechanics in PvE, but offers no consistent damage increase. Best for: Root-heavy encounters
Night Elf
Higher base Agility provides a minor crit increase, but Night Elves offer no impactful PvE racials. Best for: Aesthetic preference
Troll — Highest DPS Potential
Berserking can outperform all other racials if used at low health and stacked with cooldowns. This comes with increased risk and requires careful play. Best for: Maximum DPS, high-risk play
Orc
Blood Fury provides a reliable on-use damage boost that aligns perfectly with Rogue cooldowns. Hardiness offers minor PvE benefits. Best for: Consistent burst damage
Blood Elf
Arcane Torrent provides a small Energy gain and useful AoE silence utility, but is weaker than Troll or Orc for raw DPS. Best for: Utility-focused play
Undead
Will of the Forsaken has niche use in fear-based encounters but offers no meaningful DPS benefit in most PvE situations. Best for: PvP-oriented players
