Retribution Paladin (PVE)
A two-handed melee DPS that uses seal twisting and powerful buffs to deliver competitive damage when supported by the right group composition.
Aldor vs Scryer
When you first reach Shattrath City at level 60 or higher, you are given a choice between two factions: The Aldor and the Scryers. This decision affects which rewards you can purchase, which quest lines you can pursue, and which faction strongholds you can access in Shadowmoon Valley. While it is possible to switch later, it is best to avoid making a haphazard choice. For Retribution Paladins, the choice between Aldor and Scryer has very little impact on overall performance. However, if you care about minor optimization and long-term relevance, one option does pull slightly ahead.
Before you choose
Here are the only things you need to know before picking a side.
The difference is very small
Retribution Paladins will perform well regardless of faction choice. The difference comes down to minor optimization rather than meaningful power gains.
Shoulder enchants are the main factor
Aldor provides a slightly stronger PvE shoulder enchant, but the gap is small enough that it will not dramatically affect performance.
Early gearing still matters
Overseer's Signet is a strong pre-raid ring option and gives Aldor a small edge during early gearing.
Switching is possible
You can change factions later, but it costs time and gold. Most players benefit from picking once and sticking with it.
Aldor vs Scryer
Side-by-side comparison of early highlights, pros, and cons.
Neither choice is permanent, but your early gearing experience can feel very different depending on which faction you choose
- Greater Inscription of Vengeance is very slightly stronger for Retribution PvE than the Scryer alternative
- Access to Overseer's Signet, which is a best-in-slot pre-raid ring
- Remains the more relevant option going into later phases, including Sunwell Plateau
- Often more expensive to rush reputation due to higher demand for Aldor turn-in items
- Greater Inscription of the Blade is extremely close in value to the Aldor enchant
- Scryer reputation turn-ins are often cheaper due to lower faction popularity
- Provides no meaningful gearing advantage for Retribution PvE
- Lacks an equivalent early ring reward to Overseer's Signet
Recommendation for Retribution Paladin PvE
We recommend choosing Aldor as a Retribution Paladin in TBC Classic. - Greater Inscription of Vengeance is slightly stronger than Greater Inscription of the Blade for PvE damage. - Aldor provides access to Overseer's Signet, a best-in-slot pre-raid ring. While the difference is small and both factions are viable, Aldor offers the most consistent value across the expansion.
