Protection Warrior (PVE)
Top-tier raid tanking with excellent threat tools.
Talents
This is the BiS Protection Warrior PvE build for The Burning Crusade. It prioritizes survivability, efficient rage usage, and reliable threat generation while wearing defensive gear.
Build Philosophy
In Classic, Fury/Protection hybrid builds relied on world buffs and offensive gear to generate threat through raw damage. In The Burning Crusade, that approach no longer works. Raid encounters hit harder, world buffs are gone, and tanks must return to a traditional setup focused on survivability and shield usage. Threat is generated through high base-threat abilities and efficient rage spending, not through crit or attack power stacking.
Why Full Protection
While the early Protection tree offers limited survivability, deeper talents such as Shield Slam and Devastate are essential in TBC. These abilities provide high base damage and built-in threat, allowing Protection Warriors to maintain strong aggro even while wearing defensive gear with low offensive stats.
Why Impale Build Works
This build assumes a well-geared tank with roughly 18% critical strike chance unbuffed. At this point, shifting two points from Cruelty into Impale becomes a slight threat gain. Impale also significantly increases damage when not actively tanking, making it a strong choice for off-tanks.
