Totem-based healer with strong group healing and cooldowns.
Overview
Restoration Shamans are the most offensively oriented healers in TBC PvP, bringing unmatched team utility through Bloodlust, Windfury Totem, Purge, Earth Shock, and powerful totem support. This offensive power comes at a cost: Restoration Shamans have poor mana efficiency, limited defensive cooldowns, and rely heavily on casted healing, which forces fast-paced games and aggressive momentum-based play. As a healer, you will often be a primary focus target in PvP. Poor timing on casts can leave you locked out by interrupts, effectively shutting down your healing for several seconds. Earth Shield is a defining TBC addition that helps offset this weakness, providing passive healing and reducing pushback while you are being pressured. Restoration Shamans are viable in all forms of PvP, but they truly shine in large-scale formats such as 5v5 Arenas and Battlegrounds. The more players involved, the more value you extract from Bloodlust, totems, and disruptive utility, making Restoration one of the strongest group healers in the expansion.
Strengths
Incredible Utility
Restoration Shamans bring some of the best utility in PvP. Earth Shock and Grounding Totem disrupt enemy casts, Purge removes key buffs and heals over time, Earthbind Totem enables kiting, and Tremor Totem plus Poison Cleansing Totem help counter crowd control. You also provide powerful support totems such as Windfury Totem, Strength of Earth Totem, Grace of Air Totem, Wrath of Air Totem, and Mana Tide Totem depending on your team composition.
Bloodlust Win Conditions
Bloodlust is the strongest tempo ability in TBC PvP and can be used in Arena. In 5v5 especially, Bloodlust creates a short window where your team becomes extremely difficult to kill while simultaneously overwhelming enemy defenses, often leading to an early kill that snowballs the match.
Strong Direct Healing Output
Earth Shield and Lesser Healing Wave form the backbone of Restoration Shaman healing in PvP. While both can be countered through purges and interrupts, careful play allows them to carry fights. Using filler buffs to protect Earth Shield and practicing fake casting to bait interrupts are critical skills that allow your healing to keep pace with incoming damage.
Weaknesses
Everything Requires Cast Time
Outside of Nature’s Swiftness windows, nearly all Restoration Shaman healing requires cast time. This makes you vulnerable to interrupts, spell pushback, and crowd control, and makes emergency healing significantly harder than it is for other healers.
Low Survivability and No True Defensive Cooldowns
Restoration Shamans lack strong defensive cooldowns and instant self-healing tools. In early Arena seasons with low Resilience, this makes you especially vulnerable to coordinated burst. Survival often depends on proper Earth Shield usage, positioning, and kiting rather than reactive defensives.
Mana Dependency
Shamans are not particularly mana efficient and can run out of mana quickly if forced into heavy overhealing or extended matches. This is less of an issue in short, explosive games, but becomes a serious weakness in longer Arenas or against teams that prevent drinking.

Alliance
Draenei
Only ChoiceDraenei are the only Alliance race available to Shamans. Gift of the Naaru provides a free heal with no mana cost and uses the Holy school, which can be useful when locked out. Inspiring Presence can be very powerful in caster-heavy groups by reducing spell hit requirements.
Horde
Orc
Hardiness provides stun resistance, which is extremely valuable in PvP. Blood Fury offers a strong throughput cooldown, but must be used carefully due to its healing reduction.
Draenei — Only Alliance Option
Draenei are the only Alliance race that can play Shaman in TBC. Gift of the Naaru is a free heal with no mana cost and a different school, offering niche utility when interrupted. Inspiring Presence can provide strong value in organized caster groups, though it requires coordination.
Orc — Best Horde Choice
Orc is the strongest Horde race for Restoration PvP. Hardiness can completely disrupt enemy kill setups by resisting stuns, and Blood Fury provides a strong healing throughput boost when used safely.
Tauren — Strong Alternative
Tauren offer solid defensive and utility value. Endurance provides extra health, and War Stomp can be used to secure an uninterrupted Lesser Healing Wave cast during critical moments.
Troll — Playable but Weaker
Troll provides Berserking, which can increase casting speed with no downside. While strong in PvE, it is less impactful in PvP compared to Orc or Tauren racials, making Troll a playable but weaker option.
