Affliction Warlock (PVE)

A damage-over-time focused spec that excels at sustained pressure, utility, and PvP control.

DPSPVE

Overview

Affliction Warlocks specialize in rotting their enemies from the inside out, applying powerful damage-over-time effects and debilitating curses that scale exceptionally well on multi-target encounters. With the debuff cap increased to 40 in The Burning Crusade, Affliction is finally able to fully leverage its kit without being constrained by limited debuff slots. Affliction excels at encounters with multiple targets and heavy downtime, where damage can be preloaded through DoTs and maintained even during movement or brief incapacitation. While Affliction generally falls slightly behind other Warlock specs in raw single-target DPS, its raid-wide utility through Malediction, Shadow Embrace, and Blood Pact makes it a valuable inclusion in most raid compositions—typically as a single dedicated support Warlock.

Strengths

Exceptional Multi-Target Damage

Affliction thrives in multi-target encounters, where DoTs can be applied to multiple enemies simultaneously and maintained for high overall damage.

Strong Raid Utility

Talents like Malediction and Shadow Embrace increase raid-wide damage and reduce pressure on tanks, making Affliction valuable even when personal DPS is slightly lower.

Minimal DPS Loss During Movement

Because Affliction can preload damage through DoTs, it loses far less DPS during movement or brief incapacitation compared to hard-casting specs.

Excellent Self-Sustain

Drain Life and Siphon Life provide strong sustain, allowing Affliction Warlocks to survive damage spikes and reduce healer strain.

Unlimited Mana

Life Tap ensures Affliction Warlocks never run out of mana, allowing them to maintain pressure for the full duration of long encounters.

Strong Crowd Control

Fear and Banish give Affliction excellent control options in both raid encounters and dungeon content.

Weaknesses

Lower Single-Target DPS

On pure single-target fights, Affliction generally falls behind Destruction and Demonology in personal damage output.

High Ramp-Up Time

Affliction damage requires time to ramp as multiple DoTs are applied, making it less effective on very short-lived targets.

Threat Issues

Affliction generates significant threat over time and has limited tools to manage it, requiring careful opener timing and threat awareness.

Low Mobility

Warlocks lack movement speed bonuses and still rely on hard casts, making movement-heavy encounters less forgiving.

Soul Shard Management

Soul Shards must be farmed and managed for utility spells, adding preparation overhead compared to other DPS classes.

Limited Raid Slots

Most raid compositions only bring one Affliction Warlock, as its primary value comes from utility that does not stack well across multiple players.
