Aldor vs Scryer

When you first reach Shattrath City at level 60 or higher, you are given a choice between two factions: The Aldor and the Scryers. This decision affects which reputation rewards you can purchase, which quest lines you can pursue, and which faction strongholds you can access in Shadowmoon Valley. While it is possible to switch later, it is best to avoid making a haphazard choice. For Protection Warriors, the decision is less about raw stat differences early on and more about long-term convenience, gearing flow, and how much value you place on Phase 5 rewards.

Before you choose

Here are the only things you need to know before picking a side.

Shoulder enchants are nearly identical

Both factions offer shoulder enchants that are effectively equal in overall mitigation. The raw avoidance difference is mathematically negligible and should not drive your decision.

Early gearing matters more than math

As a tank, managing crit immunity while frequently replacing gear is a real concern early on. Defense-heavy rewards can make this process smoother, regardless of faction.

Phase 5 rewards are not permanent

The Shattered Sun Offensive necklace is a temporary item and is often replaced quickly in Sunwell-era progression.

Switching is possible

You can change factions later, but it is time-consuming and costly. Choose based on how you want your early and mid expansion tanking to feel.

Aldor vs Scryer

Side-by-side comparison of early highlights, pros, and cons.

Neither choice is permanent, but your early gearing experience can feel very different depending on which faction you choose

Aldor
Recommended
Stable early gearingStrong defensive rewardsReliable long-term choice
Highlights
  • Greater Inscription of Warding provides slightly more raw avoidance, though the difference is negligible in practice
  • Defense-focused rewards can make early gearing and crit immunity management more comfortable
  • Access to strong early defensive pieces such as Vindicator's Hauberk
Cons
  • Often more expensive to rush reputation due to higher demand for Mark of Sargeras and Fel Armament
  • Phase 5 necklace proc is less impactful for threat compared to the Scryer version
Best if you value early gearing stability, defensive comfort, and a smooth progression path.
Scryer
Phase 5 threat scalingGold efficientProfession friendly
Highlights
  • Greater Inscription of the Knight offers comparable avoidance, with additional Defense helping early crit immunity management
  • Shattered Sun Pendant of Resolve (Scryer version) provides an expertise proc that improves threat and reduces parry-haste in Phase 5
  • Exclusive Blacksmithing plans can reduce the cost of leveling Blacksmithing
Cons
  • The Phase 5 necklace advantage comes very late and is largely a stepping stone item
  • Provides little meaningful advantage during early and mid expansion tanking
Best if you are optimizing for Phase 5 threat or want to save gold while leveling professions.

What matters for Protection Warrior

Defense and gearing flow

Early on, Protection Warriors replace gear frequently and must constantly manage crit immunity. Any source of additional Defense can help smooth this process and reduce friction while gearing.

Threat versus survivability

While the Scryer Phase 5 necklace provides strong threat through expertise, it arrives very late and does not meaningfully affect most of the expansion. For the majority of TBC, survivability, healer comfort, and consistent gearing matter more than marginal threat gains.

Recommendation for Protection Warrior PvE

We recommend choosing Aldor as a Protection Warrior in TBC Classic. Greater Inscription of Warding offers strong long-term defensive value once you comfortably reach the Defense cap, and Aldor rewards support a smoother early gearing experience. While the Scryer Phase 5 necklace provides a powerful expertise proc, it arrives very late and is ultimately a transitional item. For most players, Aldor offers the more consistent and reliable tanking experience throughout the expansion.
