Affliction Warlock (PVP)

A damage-over-time focused spec that excels at sustained pressure, utility, and PvP control.

DPSPVP

Overview

Affliction Warlocks are one of the most oppressive PvP specs in TBC, built around constant rot damage, strong control, and winning through attrition. Your pressure comes from stacking multiple DoTs across targets, taxing healer mana, and punishing dispels with Unstable Affliction, while you stay extremely hard to kill through Fel Armor–boosted self-healing, Drain Life, and Life Tap sustain. Affliction’s strength is not burst — it’s inevitability. With tools like Fear, Death Coil, Howl of Terror, Spell Lock, Devour Magic, and Curse of Tongues, you can control the pace of fights while your damage steadily overwhelms opponents. Pet choice matters, but Felhunter is the backbone in most matchups thanks to dispels and Spell Lock, and Warlocks remain dangerous even when locked out by swapping between Shadow and Fire schools.

Strengths

Insane Spread Pressure

Affliction excels at multi-target rot. Keeping DoTs rolling across multiple enemies quickly overwhelms healer throughput and mana, especially in longer fights.

Punishes Dispels

Unstable Affliction discourages enemy dispels by severely punishing the dispeller, protecting your rot pressure and forcing awkward defensive decisions.

Powerful Control Toolkit

Fear, Death Coil, Howl of Terror, Curse of Tongues, Spell Lock, and Devour Magic give you the tools to control fights rather than simply trade damage.

Extreme Sustain

Life Tap provides effectively unlimited mana, while Fel Armor + Drain Life + Siphon Life create strong self-healing that makes you very difficult to kill.

Two Schools of Magic

Warlocks can pressure with both Shadow and Fire spells, letting you keep playing even when locked out — and bait interrupts to protect key casts.

Pet Utility & Flexibility

Different demons offer different advantages, but Felhunter is a standout for Spell Lock, dispels, and constant nuisance pressure against healers and casters.

Weaknesses

No Mobility

Warlocks have no movement speed tools, making positioning mistakes costly and melee uptime difficult to escape without strong control usage.

Soul Shard Management

Soul Shards are an external resource you must farm and manage, and running low can limit your ability to recover from setbacks or swap pets cleanly.

Dispellable Control & Damage

Many Warlock effects can be dispelled. While Unstable Affliction helps, DoTs and CC are still vulnerable to coordinated dispel play.

Slow, Predictable Damage Profile

DoT damage is steady rather than explosive, which can make it harder to instantly finish targets without clean control chains and pressure buildup.

Pet Dependent

Losing your pet costs you key utility (Spell Lock, dispels, and sometimes survivability). If it dies while Fel Domination is down, you can quickly lose control.

Rogues Are the Biggest Threat

Skilled Rogues can be extremely difficult to deal with due to control, interrupts, and burst. Proper trinket usage and defensive play are required.

Races

Alliance
Gnome

Alliance

Gnome

BiS

Escape Artist is invaluable for breaking roots and slows, and Expansive Mind provides extra Intellect for a deeper mana pool.

Horde

Horde

BiS

Undead

Will of the Forsaken is a huge advantage versus fear, charm, and sleep effects, giving Undead Warlocks a major edge in PvP.

Undead

Gnome — Best Alliance PvP Choice

Escape Artist breaks roots and snares on a short cooldown, which is massive in PvP where Warlocks struggle with mobility. Expansive Mind also adds Intellect for a bigger mana pool. Best for: Mobility counterplay, consistency

Human

Human

Perception is situational but helpful into stealth-heavy matchups. Other racials are mostly convenience-based and less impactful for Warlocks. Best for: Anti-stealth utility

Undead — Best Horde PvP Choice

Will of the Forsaken can swing games by breaking or preventing fear/charm/sleep effects. It’s one of the strongest PvP racials in TBC and fits Warlock gameplay perfectly. Best for: Fear control, consistency

Orc

Orc

Hardiness (15% stun resist) is strong into melee-heavy teams, and Command slightly boosts pet damage. Blood Fury is powerful but the healing reduction makes it much weaker in PvP. Best for: Melee matchups, stun mitigation

Blood Elf

Blood Elf

Arcane Torrent provides a short silence and can be useful for clutch interrupts or breaking crowd control, but is generally less impactful than Undead or Orc. Best for: Utility plays, extra silence
